During the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s worth remembering that inmates can be granted day parole to a private residence.
Under the Corrections and Conditional Release Act, the Parole Board of Canada can grant day parole to a penitentiary/jail, community-based residential facility, or an “other location”. Other location includes a private home or private facility.
Day parole to a private residence is different than full parole. A curfew and other conditions are likely to be imposed to make day parole to a private residence a more structured form of release than full parole.
Normally, day parole is granted to a community-based residential facility or halfway house. Because of COVID-19, beds are generally not becoming available as often (if at all). Social distancing can also be challenging in these types of facilities.
As such, day parole to a private residence may be more appropriate in some cases. Inmates interested in this form of release should speak with their parole officers to ensure any Community Assessments and other documents can be prepared before the hearing.
